CVE-2026-9626, 3 Jul 2026
The JSON API User plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'content' parameter of the post_comment API endpoint in versions up to, and including, 4.1.0 This is due to insufficient input sanitization in the post_comment() function, which passes the attacker-controlled comment_content value directly to wp_insert_comment() without applying any HTML sanitization, and additionally allows the caller to set comment_approved=1 to self-approve the comment and bypass moderation. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. CVE-2024-6624, 11 Jul 2024
The JSON API User plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to privilege escalation in all versions up to, and including, 3.9.3. This is due to improper controls on custom user meta fields. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to register as administrators on the site. The plugin requires the JSON API plugin to also be installed. CVE record

What to do if you run JSON API User

If you run JSON API User, open WordPress and check the installed version in Plugins. Compare it with the affected versions in the vulnerability record. If a fixed version is available, take a current backup and update to that version or the latest supported release.

If no fixed version exists, consider disabling and removing the plugin or replacing it with a maintained alternative. After dealing with the affected software, check administrator users, unexpected file changes, redirects, unfamiliar pages and security logs for signs that the site may already have been altered.
